Kutaisi, Georgia: A Budget-Friendly Winter Escape from Larnaca

If you're after somewhere different for a winter getaway, Kutaisi deserves a spot on your radar. It's Georgia's second-largest city, tucked into the Imereti region, and it's become one of the easiest places in the Caucasus to reach on a budget thanks to direct Wizz Air flights from Larnaca. Skip the crowded, overpriced capitals for once and land somewhere that still feels like a genuine discovery.

Getting There

Wizz Air flies direct from Larnaca to Kutaisi, and right now you can find round-trip fares from €37 (recent price, may vary). That's a genuinely low price for a flight into the Caucasus, and it makes Kutaisi one of the more realistic long-weekend-or-longer options out there for Cypriot travellers who don't want to blow the whole budget on the journey alone. A 6-night trip departing December 14, 2026 and returning December 20, 2026 gives you plenty of time to explore both the city and the surrounding countryside without rushing.

Why Kutaisi

Kutaisi isn't trying to be Tbilisi, and that's exactly the point. It's calmer, smaller, and has a lived-in charm that comes from being one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world. The Rioni River cuts through the middle of town, crossed by the White Bridge, and the streets around it are full of old balconied houses, open-air markets, and unhurried cafes where locals actually outnumber tourists.

The centrepiece is Bagrati Cathedral, perched on a hill overlooking the city. It dates back to the 11th century and was rebuilt over the years, and the views from up there over the rooftops and mountains beyond are worth the walk alone. A short drive out of town takes you to Gelati Monastery, a UNESCO World Heritage Site with mosaics and frescoes that have survived for centuries. Both sites give you a real sense of Georgia's deep religious and architectural history without needing a guidebook to appreciate them.

Day Trips Worth Planning Around

Kutaisi works brilliantly as a base for exploring Imereti's natural side. Prometheus Cave is one of the most popular stops, a huge underground network of chambers lit up to show off the stalactites and stalagmites without feeling like a tourist trap. If you've got a full day free, Okatse Canyon and Martvili Canyon are both within reach and offer completely different experiences, from walkways suspended along cliff edges to boat rides through narrow gorges with waterfalls overhead. December visits mean fewer crowds at all of these, so you get a much quieter, more atmospheric version of each.

Food and Local Life

Georgian food is one of the country's biggest draws, and Kutaisi is a great place to eat your way through it. Khachapuri, the cheese-filled bread that Georgia is famous for, has its own regional variations, and trying the Imeretian version in its home region is a small but satisfying ritual. Markets around the city sell local cheeses, bread, and fruit, and wandering through them gives you a feel for daily life that's hard to get anywhere more polished. Imereti is also part of Georgia's wine country, and the region's long winemaking tradition is easy to taste your way through in small, unpretentious restaurants around town.

What December Brings

Travelling in mid-December means cooler temperatures and a quieter travel season overall, which suits a place like Kutaisi. The city takes on a slower pace, the mountains around it often get their first dustings of snow, and the historic sites are far less crowded than they would be in peak summer months. It's a good time for people who want to actually experience a place rather than queue for it.

Planning the Trip

With direct Wizz Air flights from Larnaca and fares from €37 (recent price, may vary), Kutaisi is one of those destinations that proves a longer, more adventurous trip doesn't need a big flight budget to make it happen. Six nights is enough time to properly explore the city itself, take at least one or two day trips into the surrounding canyons and caves, and still have downtime to enjoy Georgian food and hospitality without feeling rushed.

It's not a destination that gets talked about as much as some of Europe's usual budget hotspots, but that's part of the appeal. Between the cathedrals, the canyons, and the low flight cost, Kutaisi offers a rare combination of history, nature, and affordability that's worth building a December trip around.
