Weekend in Athens from Cyprus for under €200

Athens is the easiest big-city escape from Cyprus. The flight is short, the schedules are frequent, and the city is one of the few European capitals where a good meal still costs less than a taxi ride. With a bit of planning, a Friday-to-Monday trip for under €200 all in is realistic. Here is how to make it work.

The flight: 1 hour 45 minutes, and often cheap

Flying time from Larnaca to Athens is roughly an hour and forty-five minutes, and it is one of the most competitive routes out of Cyprus. Several airlines fly it, including low-cost carriers, which is exactly why fares can drop very low outside school holidays. Paphos has a smaller but still regular schedule.

Prices move a lot, so treat any number as a range rather than a promise. As a rule of thumb, return fares in the quieter months often land well under €100, while peak weeks around Easter, August and Christmas can be double or more. You can see current dated fares on our route pages for Larnaca to Athens and Paphos to Athens.

Cheap-flight habits that work on this route:

Getting from the airport to the centre

Athens airport (Eleftherios Venizelos) is about 35 to 45 minutes from the centre. The cheapest option is the metro (Line 3), which runs to Syntagma Square, and the fare is a fixed, modest price for the whole journey. The X95 express bus also goes to Syntagma and is a good alternative late at night. Taxis run on a fixed tariff to the centre and are fine if you are sharing, but on a strict budget the metro wins.

If you would rather have a driver waiting on arrival, especially late at night, you can pre-book a transfer from the trip page once you choose your dates.

Where to stay

Budget €40 to €60 per person per night if you are sharing a double room, sometimes less outside peak season. Which neighbourhood matters more than the star rating:

Aim for something within a ten-minute walk of a metro station. You will save far more on transport than you spend on a slightly smaller room. We show a hotel estimate on every trip, and the final price is confirmed when you check stays on Klook.

A sensible budget

Here is one plausible split for two nights and three days, per person, sharing a room:

That puts a careful weekend around €200, and a bit lower if you catch a cheap fare. It goes above €200 quickly if you add a bag, a rooftop bar every evening, or a taxi everywhere.

What to actually do

You only have a weekend, so resist the urge to see everything.

Day one: the ancient centre. Start at the Acropolis early, when it is cooler and quieter, then walk down to the Ancient Agora. A combined ticket covers several archaeological sites and is better value than buying entries one by one. Lunch in Monastiraki, then wander through the flea market.

Day two: neighbourhoods and food. Take a morning walk up Filopappou Hill for a free, uncrowded view of the Acropolis. Spend the afternoon in Anafiotika and Plaka, then head to Psyri for the evening. Order meze, not a la carte mains, and share.

Day three: pick one thing. Either the National Archaeological Museum (which is genuinely excellent), the Central Market for a cheap lunch, or a short metro-and-tram ride to the coast at Glyfada or Vouliagmeni if the weather is warm.

Free or nearly free highlights include the changing of the guard at Syntagma on Sundays, sunset from Lycabettus Hill, and most of the old-town walking.

Money-saving tips that really matter

  1. Skip the tourist restaurants under the Acropolis. Walk two streets back from the main squares and prices drop by a third.
  2. Buy a metro pass only if you will use it. Athens is walkable, and for a short trip a few single tickets are usually cheaper.
  3. Book flights and hotel for the same dates. Changing one later often costs more than the whole saving.
  4. Go in the shoulder season. October, November and March to early May give you comfortable weather and low prices.
